T.I.A. were commissioned to produce a detailed feasibility study for the refurbishment of an existing pool facility with the addition of a new leisure & community building to create one large leisure / aquatic centre for the public. Architecturally the aspirations were to visually integrate the new building with the existing one, which proved to be a challenge due to quite strong brutalist language of the mid-70’es existing building and the desires for contemporary architecture of the addition. The concept of visual harmony is achieved with expressing the concrete lids of the new building in loosely similar forms of half-hexagonal exposed concrete soffit elements of the existing one and large volumes & airiness of both buildings.
The project brief includes the following facilities in Leisure Centre (New Building): Main Entrance, Cafe, Retail, Reception and Admin Areas; Amenities Block; Health & Fitness; Library / Function Area; Indoor Children Leisure Pool; Bike Retail Facility; External Grounds with Barbecue and Green Areas; Wellness Rooms; & in Aquatic Centre (Refurbished Existing Building): Flexible 25 / 33m Pool; Beach Entry / Program Pool; Leisure Pool; Waterslide; Learn to Swim Pool with Movable Floor; Tiered Seating around; Amenities Block; Steam / Sauna Facilities
